Import from PostHog

VersaTailor allows you to seamlessly import your historical PostHog analytics data, giving you a complete view of your product's performance. This guide will walk you through the import process step by step.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A VersaTailor account set up
  • Access to your PostHog dashboard
  • Your PostHog API key and Project ID

Step 1: Finding Your API Key

First, you'll need to find your PostHog API Key:

  1. Log in to PostHog
  2. Click your profile picture → Personal Settings
  3. Select API Keys in the sidebar
  4. Click + Create Personal API Key
  5. Name it (e.g., "VersaTailor Import")
  6. Copy the generated key (starts with "phx_")

Step 2: Finding Your Project ID

Next, you'll need to find your PostHog Project ID:

  1. Click the gear icon (⚙️) in the top navigation
  2. Look for Project ID at the top
  3. Copy the numeric ID

Step 3: Import to VersaTailor

Now, let's import your data into VersaTailor:

  1. Open your VersaTailor dashboard
  2. Go to your website settings
  3. Click on the "Import" tab
  4. Find the PostHog card and click "Import"
  5. Upload your PostHog data in the import modal
  6. Monitor the progress bar during processing

Step 4: Managing Imported Data

Need to remove imported PostHog data? Here's how:

  1. Go to your website settings
  2. Open the "Import" tab
  3. Scroll to "Remove Imported Data"
  4. Click "Remove PostHog Data"
  5. Confirm the removal

Security Notes

Security Note: Keep your API key secure and never share it publicly. Treat it like a password.

Important Information

Important: The import may take a few minutes depending on your data volume. You can continue using VersaTailor while it runs.

Warning

Warning: Removing imported data is a permanent action and cannot be reversed. Make sure you have a backup if needed.

What Gets Imported

  • Page views: All page view data within the selected date range
  • Events: Custom events and their properties
  • Users: User identification and properties
  • Sessions: Session data and user journeys
  • Properties: Custom properties and attributes

Troubleshooting

Import Fails

If the import fails:

  1. Check that your API key is correct and has proper permissions
  2. Verify your Project ID is accurate
  3. Ensure you have sufficient data export permissions in PostHog
  4. Contact support if the issue persists

Data Not Appearing

If imported data doesn't appear:

  1. Wait a few minutes for processing to complete
  2. Check the import status in your VersaTailor dashboard
  3. Verify the date range of imported data
  4. Contact support if data is missing

Best Practices

  • Test with small dataset first: Import a small date range to test the process
  • Backup your data: Keep a backup of your PostHog data before importing
  • Monitor the process: Watch the import progress and check for any errors
  • Verify results: After import, verify that your data appears correctly
